This set of 6 mindful breathing boards are a simple and effective way to introduce mindfulness to your child. Regulation is a skill that needs to be taught. And these breathing boards take the guess work out of it for you. They are practical, concrete tools you can start using with your child right away. And they are so simple, children as young as 2 or 3 years old can use them. After all, it’s never too early to start introducing mindfulness skills to kids and helping them understand how to calm their bodies and minds!
Why Breathing Boards?
Deep, slow breathing helps to switch off our body’s stress response and is a signal to the brain that we are safe. This means that if children are able to harness the power of their breath, then they have a highly effective calm down strategy in their toolbox. A strategy that works quickly and can be used anywhere, any time.
Breathing boards are designed to provide children with a visual cue that helps them maintain focus and learn the correct technique. It can be difficult for young children to focus their attention on just their breath. This is especially true if your child is feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or fearful. But the repetitive tracing action and visual feedback provided by these boards give your child something to focus on as they breathe. This helps them master the technique more quickly, and apply it more effectively.
Using your Mindful Breathing Boards
To use your boards, simply print out the pages and cut out each board. There are 2 boards to each A4 page, making them the perfect size for small hands and fingers and easy to tuck into a calm down kit or bag. You may like to print them on card stock or laminate them for added durability.
To do the exercises, your child simply traces around each shape slowly with their finger, following the arrows and prompts as they go. They keep tracing and breathing until they feel calm and in control again.
